NDIS foundations set for mid 2013
The Gillard government and all state and territory governments have agreed to lay the foundations for a National Disability Insurance Scheme by mid-2013, a year ahead of the timetable set out by the Productivity Commission.
The agreement was reached by the Select Council on Disability Reform at its inaugural meeting, which saw ministers from each state and territory agree on the key foundation reforms necessary for the NDIS. These include common assessment tools to determine eligibility, national quality standards and strategies to boost the disability workforce.
The Select Council also considered the draft principles and terms of reference to be agreed by the Council of Australian Governments (COAG). These will be the guiding principles of the work carried out by the Select Council in its reform of disability services.
It agreed that the next meeting will focus on funding and governance and report on progress on the reform foundations. It will report to COAG on its progress at the first COAG meeting in 2012.
